⭐ Why I Ran This Lake
Some lakes are destinations. Some are races. Lake Ronkonkoma ended up being both.

My birthday was on Friday and I wanted nothing more than a destination lake run. When I came across Run Around the Lake down on Long Island, it felt perfect for me in so many ways.

With this year marking the 21st anniversary of Michael Murphy’s death during a reconnaissance mission in Afghanistan, I wanted to write something a little more reflective. Some people gave everything so people like me can do things like this — run races, travel, explore, gather with friends — and I am incredibly grateful.

Many of my friends also participate in “The Murph” challenge at gyms each year around Memorial Day weekend, but who was Michael P. Murphy?

Michael P. Murphy was born in Smithtown, New York on May 7, 1976. He attended Patchogue-Medford High School and later studied political science and psychology at Penn State. Before entering military service, he worked as a lifeguard in Lake Ronkonkoma.

After graduating in 2000, despite being accepted into several law schools, he chose a military path that ultimately led to becoming a Navy SEAL.

On June 28, 2005, during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan, he knowingly exposed himself to enemy fire in order to transmit a distress call and seek help for his team. His actions ultimately contributed to saving another team member’s life and he was later awarded the Medal of Honor for extraordinary courage and self-sacrifice.

🏃 The Run
This race gave me the chance to combine two things I enjoy — exploring and participating in events that bring people together for a greater purpose.

The course circled Lake Ronkonkoma and surrounding neighborhood streets. The event as a whole brought together approximately 4,000 runners in support of veteran organizations.

Due to 89% humidity, I realized a few miles in there was no way I was going to be able to race this. I decided to walk at every water stop and make sure I grabbed enough water. Despite this being my worst half marathon performance ever, I have no regrets about the experience.

There was something meaningful about sharing miles with so many people while reflecting on service, sacrifice, and gratitude. This wasn’t just another lake run.

🌅 Scenery Notes
Lake Ronkonkoma felt different from many of my quieter lake runs. Water views mixed with neighborhoods, spectators, volunteers, and thousands of runners moving together around the lake.

🗒️ Notes for Next Time
This project has made me think about so many full-circle moments in my life, and it’s been incredible to reflect on where I am right now.

Next year this race will fall on my birthday. I will be back.

Sometimes a lake is just a lake. Sometimes it is part of a story. I’m grateful to have been part of this one.
